Rev Joel was appointed a Designated Minister on Feb 28th, 2017. Since that time, Joel has demonstrated that he is a consummate professional and a quick learner. His focus is on celebrating Life Events

Hobbies

Joel loves spending time outdoors and will walk around anywhere, rain, snow or shine, whether he is playing tourist in Vancouver or another city! He enjoys hiking and camping as well. One of the things he is most proud of is having visited every single province and all three territories in Canada!

Counseling Activities

Vancouver Community College
As an instructor and the practicum coordinator, his role includes advising students about life and career direction. Many of these discussions also include students seeking assistance with personal items ranging from all ends of the spectrum.

These one-on-one meetings include a total student base of 350 students, with ten 1-hour meetings hours per week specifically allotted for one-on-one sessions and 2 hours per week for open office hours.

Simon Fraser University – Beedie School of Business
MBA Mentorship Program – This past year, Joel volunteered as a mentor to a student. He  met with the student every three weeks over a period of seven months for approximately 1-2 hours for each meeting. He was specifically sought out for this partnership as the student was an international student looking for Canadian exposure in the Hospitality Industry.

BC & Yukon HR Association
Mentorship Program – In 2018, he was the mentor for other HR professionals in the Vancouver area. Specifically, he had two mentees at the start of the program, but ended up with another one a few months into it. The program was once a month from October to June. In the meetings, mentees were able to ask questions in any area of practice within the HR field.

Community Involvement

In April of 2018, Joel became a member of the BCS 1559 Strata Council. As a member of his building condos’ strata, he attends monthly council meetings to review concerns, issues and community and building related topics.

Besides being a general member, he also leads the special projects area which includes various projects this past year as well as oversee the privy concerns that arise.

He also actively participates, volunteers and initiates community fostering activities within his building such as the summer BBQ party, Halloween costume contest and Holiday decorating event.

VCC DAY
(Wellness/Engagement/Professional Development Day for all levels of employees in Vancouver.) Joel was a member of the brainstorming and conference committee for this event. He also volunteered the day of the event so that all employees were able to participate.

Personal Growth

Joel is currently in the final stage of obtaining his Provincial Instructors Diploma. This is a seven-course program based on adult education which includes the following subjects/courses:

  • Media Enhanced Learning
  • Instructional Strategies
  • Professional Practice
  • Capstone Project (currently completing)
